Aqua ad Vinum

About Aqua ad Vinum

Aqua ad Vinum is Zeeland's oldest and largest student association.

Beyond the people you meet as a member, you grow in all kinds of ways through committee or board work, and build your CV along the way. You can also train with one of our sports teams. At Aqua ad Vinum you make friends for life.

What we stand for

Nothing required, everything allowed

Our motto since 2005. Join in at your own pace, nobody requires anything of you.

No hazing

We don't haze. New members just get a warm welcome, full stop.

For everyone

An international association with members from all over the world; English-speaking members are also very welcome.

Low-threshold

You can come check out the vibe up to three times before you need to decide if AAV is for you.

History

2001

Aqua ad Vinum is founded

In early 2001, Vlissingen had five student associations: 't Floei, Quadrivium, Mort Subite, Cinaedus, and Mirfisto. Rabobank, the Netherlands' biggest student bank at the time and sponsor of these associations, decided five was too many for a town the size of Vlissingen and asked them to merge into two. Three of the associations merged into S.V. Trias Omega. The merger between Cinaedus and Mirfisto was rockier, but on 31 May 2001 it eventually produced a new association: Aqua ad Vinum, which means 'water to the wine'. It became the first general student association of Hogeschool Zeeland.

2005

Nothing required, everything allowed

In April 2005, the dispuut Marum Bibio split off from the main association over differences with the board at the time. That split is also where our motto was born: 'Nothing required, everything allowed'. AAV wanted to set itself apart, move with the times, and leave old habits behind, hazing for first-years among them.

2019

The move to De Dop

After some great years in sociëteit De Trappe, above Tripel, we had to move downstairs. That move was the birth of sociëteit De Dop.

2024

AAV moves to Middelburg

After years with De Dop as our home base, we decided halfway through 2024 to move our activities to Middelburg. That follows HZ's own shift of programmes from Vlissingen to Middelburg, which keeps growing as the beating heart of student life in Zeeland. From now on we party on in Feestcafé de Heeren, a lively, central spot right in the middle of town.

2026

25th anniversary

On 6 June we celebrated our 25th anniversary with a big party at Huys ter Schelde, a monumental 1910 villa in Koudekerke, right between Middelburg and Vlissingen.
